"Portions" lets you enter and track your food consumption, using the Canada Food Guide as a benchmark for daily recommended intake. "Portions" is divided into three screens that allow you to enter or to view your portions.
The "Entry" screen allows you to enter your food intake and weight for any day. You enter your portions for the four food groups: fruit & vegetables, grain products, dairy, and protein. There is a section for junk food, but this has a negative impact on your percentage. The daily percentage (think of it as a score) is based on how close your consumption matches the daily recommended amounts.
The "Calendar" screen shows a monthly summary where each day is colored based on the percentage from the Entry screen. Press any day to see the number of portions consumed on that day.
The "Portions" screen is a handy reference to what constitutes a portion in each of the four food groups (vegetables, grains, dairy and protein).
The "Chart" screen shows a graph of the last month of percentage and weight.
There is also a "Portions" section in the iPhone Settings application that allows you to specify your age and gender, as well as how long to keep your entries for. Be sure to set this up before using Portions, as the recommended daily amounts differ based on age and gender.
"Portions" isnt guaranteed to help you lose weight, but it will let you know whether or not youre eating healthy or not.
Pros and cons of Portions app for iPhone and iPad
Portions app good for
This is a simple quick easy to use program to remind you of what you have eaten in a day and what kinds of foods that you may have left for snacking. I would like to be able to track 1/2 Portions though as i only 1 egg for for a meal. Other than that it is perfect for my needs. I have been using it against the fitness app and interestingly enough they both are fairly equal by end of day… but this app takes 1/8 of the time to input the information and doesnt require calorie counting.
I find portion control easier than counting calories, and this app based on the Canada Food Guide is a simple and easy way to stay on track. The ability to adjust the number of Portions is very helpful in personalizing it to your particular needs. No food enters my mouth without being entered into this app first. This makes me think about what Im eating and why, and encourages me to plan ahead. Im eating healthily, I feel great, Im getting closer to a healthy weight, my blood pressure is great ... Its all good! Thanks, to the developer of this app and to the Canada Food Guide.
I second the request for being able to track half Portions. Also a category for water consumption would be great. Other than those small requests I quite like this app. It is simple and easy to use. Thanks.
This app is simple and effective for helping you track your nutritional intake and portion sizes. I especially love that you can customize your number of servings so each user can set their own individual goals to meet. The only thing I would change would be to add a small feature that allows you to track half Portions. Otherwise, Im very impressed!
Great app for simple food tracking. However, the customizable food servings will. It let me change quantities right now. Please look into this!
Clean and simple design, great overall. Would like to see more food Portions in the guide section and maybe also a section on junk food portion sizes so you can keep a more accurate log. It would also be nice to be able to edit daily portion amounts in case you were on a special diet. Im happy with my purchase, thanks!
Some bad moments
I hate it....A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY....MISLEADING.....I have an iPhone 3G S , which should be compatible with this application....there isnt a Settings option as the screen prints above would suggest.... its innacurate in its recommendations....plus if you enter more than the the requirement that it does sugggest (which is not inline with the Canada food guide) it kills the tracking, which was already wrong in the first place....there are hardly any items listed under Portions...its a waste of time, money and energy...GRRRR!
This app. doesnt work...what a waste of money. As it says it is compatible with the Ipod Touch...yah...right. Once you pay for it it wont load. Awful, dont buy it! The support is a joke to. Theres nothing there & no way to contact the creator.
I do not find where to enter my age and gender on my Ipod Touch to adjust the daily portion (i use the french version). So the app is not usable at all...And there are a lot of typos in the text. I do hope you will be fast to correct those bugs because this app could be great ! I will give it a 5 stars when this will be corrected.
the app is a good idea, simple, but the Portions suggested are not accurate! and there is no way to adjust them within the age group (eg pregnancy, diabetic person). if it could be possible to manually adjust the recommended Portions it would be great. for now, this app is a total disappointment. not worth 99 cents.
I agree! Great idea but disappointing. I wish Id read the reviews before paying 99 cents...
Dont bother the serving amounts are not correct. Definitely not according to the Canadian food guide. This app should not be for sale with such a glaring problem. Doesnt take into account that male and females have different serving sizes and the sizes on this app are not even kids amounts
